Waste and Agriculture

The potential of organic waste to address food insecurity within informal settlements underscores the need for pragmatic collective interventions among waste players. If explored to the brim, Organic waste has shown evidence of supporting projects like urban farming to enable food secure households therefore lowering household expenditure in the wake of inflations and deteriorating economies thanks to climate change effects.

Evamor Africa is conducting a Waste and agriculture project in Bandani settlement that seeks to enlighten residents of the settlement on available agricultural opportunities associated with the organic waste emanating from the settlement.

The project currently at its initial stage has had several engagements with women urban farmers in the settlement to assess settlement land resources and necessary equipment needed to segregate organic waste from the community waste centre. Through kitchen gardening and diversified farming methods (like BSF and Vermicompost farming) the project hopes to enable women embrace organic urban farming to meet their household food needs and simultaneously produce surplus food to sell at the local markets.
